Every buildout conversation gets here eventually, usually right after somebody sees the price difference. Here is how we think about it.
What actually separates them
Cat6 supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet to roughly 55 meters under good conditions. Cat6A supports it to the full 100 meters and has meaningfully better alien crosstalk performance, which matters when a lot of cables run bundled together for long distances.
The cable itself is thicker and stiffer. That is not a footnote — it changes pathway fill calculations, bend radius requirements, and how long the pull takes. A Cat6A job costs more in cable and more in labor.
When Cat6A is the right call
- New construction you expect to own for 15+ years. The cable is the part you cannot easily replace later. Everything plugged into it will turn over two or three times first.
- Runs over 55 meters where 10G is on the roadmap at all.
- Wireless access points, especially Wi-Fi 6E and 7. The uplink demand on a busy AP is the most common place we see 1G become a real ceiling.
- Dense bundles in long pathways, where alien crosstalk stops being theoretical.
- Healthcare, education, and anywhere with a long capital cycle.
When Cat6 is fine
- Short runs in a tenant space you lease for five years.
- Standard desk drops where the endpoint is a laptop dock or a phone.
- Retrofits where the existing pathway physically will not take Cat6A without a much larger project.
The hybrid that usually wins
On most of our commercial jobs we run Cat6A to access points, cameras, and anything on a long run, and Cat6 to standard workstation drops. You spend the money where it changes the answer and not where it does not.
The part that matters more than either
A carelessly installed Cat6A run will test worse than a carefully installed Cat6 run. Untwisting pairs too far back, over-tightening zip ties, violating bend radius, and kinking cable during the pull will cost you more performance than the category ever gave you.
Ask any bidder for sample certification reports from a recent job. The ones who test everything will have them ready.
